I hadn't heard of it until today and for good reason. What drew my attention to it today, however, was the addition of 4K support. I initially thought that I wouldn't be impressed. I have seen side-by-side comparisons of 4K upscaling on literally dozens of console games and have consistently been underwhelmed.
The improvements usually amount to a sharpening of the picture and removal of some of the jaggies but these upgrades are barely noticeable when you are sitting 10 feet from the screen. At the end of it all, you're still looking at low-res textures in high-definition. So when I fired up the video above, I was expecting the usual.
What I got was something that genuinely impressed me. The improvements to Yakuza 4 were particularly remarkable. Seeing this made me want to play through some of my favorite games on RPCS3. Is there any way for the PS3 to automatically scaled every game to p? Like is there a trick to using maybe a VGA adapter or component cable or anything?
Iceberg73e 8 years ago 2. There isn't such a method. Forcing a game meant to run at to run in is not going to make it look better. Mattywright77 8 years ago 4. I prefer my games to run native or as close too so never checked just let my PS3 auto it. Its intentional. You cant tell the difference between and when you are sitting several feet away from your screen depending how big your screen is.
Developers are trying to maximize graphics quality and frame rate per second at the expense of HD resolution. Most games dont go above 30 FPS. Movies run at 24 fps. If the game supports p you can disable p and force the PS3 to scale it however it will only work on titles that support p scaling. If it is a p only title and you do this it will downscale to standard definition and be sent to your tv only to be upscaled by the tv resulting in a poorer image.
Coming soon: 2 Seaton Submersives from Mark Seaton. NightDrifter05 8 years ago 7. Why would you want to force it to scale up?
If anything it's just going to stretch and make it more pixelated to fit the resolution you want. I personally have the setting disabled since no PS3 game's run in a native and they tend to look far far better in with the exception of a few titles. This applies to all forms of media playback on the original and PS4 Slim, so neither will upscale Blu-rays, Netflix, YouTube, and so on. And this is exactly what Sony had in mind when they released the PS4 Pro, a machine capable of delivering a sort of middle ground for 4K hungry gamers.
In games that support it, a technique called checkerboard rendering is used to create an image that, while not exactly native 4K, is far more visually impressive than upscaling. It is also designed within the console to create less of a performance footprint when utilized. Some games are capable of being displayed at native 4K on the PS4 Pro, but the overwhelming majority of games marketed with a 4K mode use checkerboard rendering.
Many have found the the quality of the upscaler to be quite good, creating an image that is clearly better than p. Rockstar somehow managed to get Red Dead Redemption 2, one of the best looking games of all time, running at native 4K on it. The engineers at Sony and Microsoft are sure to improve upon checkerboard rendering as well for those games taking the middle road.
How important is 4K gaming to you? What about 4K content in general?
